Inshee needs our help

There are, of course, many people on this world who could make good use of a little help. All of us naturally do our best when we are confronted with those needing help in a manner of speaking “upon our own doorsteps”. This is right and good and earns you merit in Heaven or brings you good Karma or in whatever manner  your personal belief system tries to make it more appetizing.

When Inshee’s case was laid upon my doorstep, I acted at once.

Inshee (his name means “eagle” in Thai) is well known to Chirada - they were even at school together. He comes from a family that was well known for always finding something for the needy and he has followed this tradition his whole life. (click on the pictures to see them in large format)

Inshee is married with two children who are still studying. He, himself, works in a cement factory with a quite small wage so that the family just squeaks by each month - building reserves is not possible!

In Thailand, many things work differently to the way in which we are accustomed. This includes road works. When road repairs are started, the first thing that happens is that huge concrete blocks are laid across the road. These are unlighted and there are no warning signs. Either you see them in time and can brake or you drive straight into them.

In the darkest of the night of the 21st to the 22nd February, this is what happened to Inshee.

His motor insurance pays for his stay in hospital (estimated to be 2 months) and treatment (right leg broken in three places) but for nothing else. There is, theoretically, sick pay at 50% of the normal wage but is a very long winded bureaucratic process which can often take six months. What his wife and children should live from in that time or how school fees are to be paid is a question in which the state apparatus takes no interest.

Thanks to a very generous donation from Anna * * * * which she sent to me last week, I was able to cover the immediate financial needs of the family. I find it also very interesting that the bank transfer to Thailand arrived on the following morning whereas these normally take 2 - 3 days.

For how many months Inshee will be unable to work and whether he will be physically able to do his job in the cement factory again are questions to which, at the moment there are no answers available. My personal feeling is that this is a turning point in his life and that he will do other work afterwards.

So, what does this family need?

A monthly income of at least £283 / $393 / €320
A new motorcycle for Inshee costs about £885 / $1230 / €1000
             In my opinion, a small, good quality used car would be better as this would permit days out with his family. It appears that these are very expensive in Thailand and would cost around £8,900 / 12,300 / €10,000 - rather more than we would pay for a new car in Europe!

His daughter, Bahmee is studying information technology but has only an old, rickety (Windows XP) laptop which is not capable of running some of the programmes which she needs. Computers are much cheaper in Europe than in Thailand. We, of course, know many people who fly to Thailand and would take a laptop for us in their hand luggage. If there is someone out there with a spare laptop that they would be willing to give, this would also be gratefully received. In Thailand, there are many computer shops which will modify the operating system language to Thai for a moderate fee.

This is a clear example of the great effects which can be achieved by small actions carried out together.

If, for example, everyone who receives this newsletter were to give just £5 / $5 / €5 - a sum which I would maintain everyone can give with no problem - the needs listed above would be immediately met and there would be a surfeit which could be used for other deserving needy. Alternatively, if 5% of the readers each give £100 / $100 / €100 then the same result will be achieved.
